HIGH ENERGY PIPING SYSTEMS: INSPECTIONS & WELD REPAIRS
Presentation by Anita Zunker, PEI, with Contact Energy
PEI has worked with Contact Energy to manage their high energy piping systems at their Otahuhu B and Taranaki Combined Cycle Power plants. Contact had identified the need for a weld inspection programme and set up the programme to start during their 73k outage at Otahuhu B. There were some interesting findings from their initial inspections and these highlighted that a similar process needed to be applied to their other CCGT unit in Taranaki. This presentation reviews how the initial findings influenced the way forward in their weld inspection programme, goes through the lessons learned within the process. The presentation also will show some examples of the interesting technical issues that were identified during the inspections, including:
• Hot Reheat (HRH) P91 Type IV cracking
• Hot Reheat (HRH) incorrect consumable in P91 piping
• HP Main Steam 304H cracking
• Hot Reheat (HRH) Manifold cracking of butt weld / branch weld intersection
• HP & HRH Desuperheater issues
